Somos testigos de los sentimientos del protagonista, Florentino Ariza, quien no puede evitar fijarse en la encantadora pero tímida Fermina Daza, en el funeral del octagenario doctor Juvenal Urbino. El Dr. Urbino había estado casado con Fermina Daza de 72 años, a lo largo de más de medio siglo. Ella está enfurecida con Florentino, quien le profesa su amor de toda la vida; punto en el cual, el director Mike Newell retrocede al cortejo previo y procede a lo largo de unos 52 años en sus vidas. En su juventud, Florentino fue rechazado por la hermosa Fermina, por lo que él dedicó una buena parte de su vida adulta a aventuras carnales en un desesperado intento de sanar su corazón herido.

Set in South America, this chronicle takes in the fifty-year period straddling the 19^th and 20^th centuries. We are privy to the feelings of the central character, Florentino Ariza, who cannot help but staring at the lovely but shy Fermina Daza, at the funeral of 80 year-old Dr. Juvenal Urbino. Dr. Urbino had been married to 72 year-old Fermina Daza for over a half century and Fermina is enraged at Florentino who professes his lifetime love for her, at which point director Mike Newell flashes back to the early courtship and proceeds through some fifty-two years of their lives. At a young age, Florentino was rejected by beautiful Fermina and he devoted much of his adult life to carnal affairs at a desperate attempt to heal his broken heart.
